"This Fire Station consisted of two main bays, and was situated next to the old Southdown Bus Terminal Station at the opening of River Road in Arundel. The Station was a former Riverside Warehouse used for the loading and unloading of Schooners and barges which came up the River Arun in the early nineteen hundreds. It was owned by the Arundel Borough Council and underwent modernisation during 1938 when war was looming to become a emergency fire station as the premises in Maltravers Street were deemed unsuitable. The fire station remained in use throughout the war years and into the fifties and sixties. West Sussex Fire Brigade vacated the building in the September of 1967 for the New Fire Station in Ford Road at Arundel. The Old building remained for several years but was semi-demolished in 1970 for a town centre car park, and finally fully demolished in 1973. During the mid fifties it was extensively modernised which included the construction of a new watch room and the widening of the main appliance doors to incorporate the new forthcoming appliance these were glass varnished in appearance." - Robert Carver |
